Letter from the President
Dear Friends:

One in five Americans has some kind of disability, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Census. Under section 508 of the amended Rehabilitation Act of 1973, these 54 million people are entitled to easy access to electronic and information technology. While many companies are now beginning to make the necessary adjustments to their web sites and other information technology, LifeCare has been 508-compliant for nearly a year.

In fact, we serve the diverse needs of our clients’ employees in a number of other ways, as well. For instance, we provide them with 24/7 access to multilingual specialists—and we use the AT&T Language Line, which provides translation services in 204 languages. For the hearing impaired, we provide access to specialists via toll-free TDD phone lines. And, we offer counseling, education and referrals on a wide range of issues including learning disabilities, special needs programs and schools, and child care options for children and adults with physical, behavioral or emotional disabilities.

LifeCare will continue to enhance the ways that we provide information and assistance to employees with special needs, and we remain committed to ensuring that our practices and our technology break down information barriers.

And while we’re on the subject of information technology, I’d like to officially welcome you to the first online edition of the LifeCare Connection! As promised in the last issue, we put the names of everyone who provided us with their e-mail addresses into a box (a very large one!) and selected a name at random to win a free Palm Pilot. Congratulations to Linda Julius of DuPont! Your Palm Pilot is on its way.

I want to thank everyone who responded so enthusiastically and provided us with their e-mail addresses. While the new format of this publication won’t affect the information we provide, your thoughts and opinions certainly do. So let us know what you think of the new format and the articles. And please let us know how the LifeCare Connection could better meet your needs.

Sincerely,

John B. Place
