LifCare/Toyota Webinar Highlights Best Practices and Organizational Benefits of Workplace Breastfeeding Programs

Employers who fail to support their employees' breastfeeding goals are not only putting their organizations at risk competitively but they're also missing out on the bottom-line savings that workplace lactation programs offer. This was one of the key messages of LifeCare's web-based seminar, Designing Effective Corporate Lactation Programs, which took place on Monday, August 7, at 12 noon Eastern Time. The webinar was free of charge to participants from dozens of the nation's top employers.

The webinar featured presentations from Marianne C. Stook, LifeCare's managing director of Employer Sponsored Work/Life Initiatives, and Elizabeth Hall, organizational development manager at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Stook reviewed tips for effective lactation program design, the business benefits of such programs (including reduced health care expenses for mothers and infants), and program best practices culled from the company's experiences with assisting employers nationwide in supporting breastfeeding workers. Hall spoke about the success of Toyota's Mothers at Work workplace breastfeeding program, which the company launched in 2000, and how the Human Resources department successfully presented the case for the program's inception.
