What's Stressing Today's Working Parents? Homework, LifeCare® Poll Finds

WESTPORT, CT, May 30, 2007 – It looks like kids aren't the only ones who dread homework. Ninety-nine percent of working parents feel some level of stress when trying to help their children with homework—and 49 percent of them rate the stress they feel as “high.” These finding come from the most recent online poll conducted by LifeCare®, Inc., provider of comprehensive specialty care services and a longtime leader in the work/life industry.

Conducted throughout the month of April on LifeCare's private web site, the poll was open to employees and members of LifeCare's 1,500 client organizations. Complete results of the poll are as follows:

As a working parent, please rate the level of stress you feel over helping your children with homework/learning challenges?

  High stress — 49%

  Moderate stress — 35%

  Low stress — 15%

  None — 1%

“All working parents want to help their children succeed in school but many of them don't have the time or knowledge to help with every homework assignment, and that can be extremely stressful for the parents and children alike,” said LifeCare CEO, Peter G. Burki. “That's why we created our recently launched Homework Connection service. It significantly reduces the stress that parents and their children experience when dealing with homework challenges. And Homework Connection is a lot less expensive than private tutoring or academic enrichment classes.”

Homework Connection provides students with secure web access to professional tutors in all core subjects. The sessions are always one-on-one, no scheduling is required and students have unlimited usage of the service. Students and tutors collaborate in a secure web environment—communicating via instant messaging, drawing problems on an interactive whiteboard, sharing files and browsing educational resources together. No special equipment or software is needed. LifeCare is partnering with Tutor.com, the world leader in live, online tutoring, to deliver the service to employers and governmental agencies nationwide.

“For organizations that want to give their working parents peace of mind and give students a whole new level of personal attention, Homework Connection is the perfect solution,” said Burki.

Each month, LifeCare posts a poll on its private members' web site asking individuals to share their thoughts and opinions on the latest issues and work/life trends. Past polls have addressed topics such as work/life balance, family caregiving challenges, aging, flexible work arrangements, and barriers to on-the-job productivity.
