For National Safety Month, LifeCare® Poll Asked Participants, “How Safe Is Your Workplace?”

WESTPORT, Conn., July 21, 2005 – In light of June's designation as National Safety Month, LifeCare®, Inc., the exclusive provider of Life Event Management® Services, decided to ask participants of its monthly online poll to rate the safety of their workplaces. Here's how they responded:

  48 percent selected the response, “Safe—procedures and guidelines seem adequate to me.”

  24 percent chose, “Very Safe—so safe, I never even think about it.”

  22 percent chose, “Somewhat Safe—I think improvements could be made.”

  and 6 percent selected, “Not Safe—improvements should be made immediately.”

The poll was open to employees of LifeCare's 1,500 client companies nationwide via its web site, www.lifecare.com, during the month of June.

Excerpt from “A LifeCare®
Guide: Child Safety: The
Internet and Television”

  Consider keeping the computer in a family room or other common area so you can monitor your child's Internet use.

  Set limits on the amount of time your child can spend on the Internet—including different limits for time spent on academic research and time spent surfing, playing games, chatting, etc.

  Frequently review the Web sites your child has been visiting to make sure they are appropriate. You can view the list of sites he or she has visited using your Web browser's “History” feature.

  Instruct your child to inform you if she/he stumbles upon inappropriate material and to leave the site at once.

  Compile a list of Web sites that you have approved, and consider limiting your child's use to only those sites. Use the “Bookmark” feature to keep a list of acceptable sites.

“It's reassuring to see employees so overwhelmingly report that their workplaces are safe,” said Peter G. Burki, LifeCare's CEO and co-founder. “However, the workplace is just one aspect of safety that concerns employees. They're also interested in home safety and the safety of their children, especially during unsupervised time in the summer months. Internet safety is also becoming more of a mainstream issue. And the safety of older loved ones is a topic of rapidly growing concern as the nation's population ages.”

Burki noted that LifeCare provides a wealth of safety-related educational materials and resources including:

  dozens of articles and LifeCare Guides on a wide range of safety topics (e.g., toddler
    safety, nursery equipment safety, toy safety, travel safety precautions, safe driver tips, etc.);

  online safety seminars;

  online audio tips;

  an Emergency Family Plan Card that helps the entire family prepare for quick action in an emergency;

  and helpful links to safety-related web sites (including the US Consumer Product Safety Commission site, the Common Sense About Kids and Guns site, the foodsafety.gov site, and more).

“And, as always, our highly trained specialists are standing by 24/7 at our call center to answer people's questions about personal, family or work-related safety,” Burki added.
