Workers Reveal Main Sources of Stress in LifeCare Poll

SHELTON, CT, October 28, 2009

Stress is nothing new to the American workforce, and the majority of workers know exactly where this stress is coming from: their jobs. A poll conducted throughout the month of September by LifeCare®, Inc., a leading provider of health and productivity solutions for employers nationwide, asked workers, “What stresses you more—work or family responsibilities?” They responded as follows:

  • Work — 55%
  • Family — 35% (24% cited parenting issues; 7% cited caring for an adult loved one; 4% cited general family issues)

Another 10 percent chose “other,” with most citing finances as their major stressor, followed by relationship issues.

“There’s no doubt that this is an especially challenging time for American workers and their families,” said LifeCare CEO, Peter G. Burki. “They’re dealing with a tremendous amount of stress related to job security and financial concerns, and this can quickly compound the everyday pressures of family life and caregiving. It’s more important than ever for employers to help ease this stress so their employees can stay focused, productive and healthy.”

Burki says that employers should be working closely with their work/life and employee assistance program partners to vigorously promote their stress management resources. To help its clients’ employees better manage their personal challenges, LifeCare recently launched new stress management workshops and created a Financial Crisis Center. Burki also noted that participation in LifeCare’s financial seminar series with Jean Chatzky has spiked significantly, along with participation in its webcasts and podcasts related to stress management and personal finances.

Each month, LifeCare posts a poll on its private web site asking individuals to share their thoughts and opinions on the latest issues and work/life trends. Past polls have addressed topics such as health and wellness, work/life balance and caregiving issues.
