Protect Yourselfand Your Loved Onewith A Caregiver
Agreement
WESTPORT, Conn., August 29, 2006 – With millions of U.S. workers
taking on caregiving duties for parents and other older loved ones, many eventually
find it necessary to seek the help of a professional caregiver. When hiring
a caregiver on your own, consider creating an agreement outlining the specific
details of your employment relationship. Below are some of the points a caregiver
agreement should include. And remember, one copy of your final agreement should
be given to the caregiver and one copy should be retained by you or the elder's
family, and be sure to have an attorney review the document before it is signed.
| |
The date that employment will begin.
| |
State that employment shall be at will, meaning
that either party can terminate the agreement at any time for any reason.
| |
State where the care will be given (actual address)
as well as the hours and days it will be given.
| |
Outline the caregivers duties specifically.
| |
State the amount that the caregiver will be paid
and when/how often the caregiver will be paid. Note all applicable taxes.
| |
Ask the caregiver to provide you with a specific
number of days' notice in case she/he wishes to terminate employment.
| |
Outline any behaviors that must be avoided by the
caregiver (e.g., no smoking on the premises, no alcohol consumption during
care hours, etc.).
| |
Spell out guidelines/requirements regarding vacation
days and sick days. |
